Engagement Overview

We are a global nonprofit operating across multiple countries seeking a Compensation Consultant (Independent Contractor) to provide ongoing, as-needed advisory support on global compensation programs and practices.

This engagement is intended to supplement internal HR capacity by providing specialized compensation expertise on a flexible basis, supporting both planned initiatives and emerging needs. The consultant will deliver discrete analyses, recommendations, and project-based outputs to help strengthen compensation frameworks, ensure internal equity, and align with market practices.

This is a non-exclusive, independent contractor engagement, not an employment position. Work will be requested periodically and scoped based on organizational priorities.

Scope of Services

The consultant will provide advisory and project-based support, which may include:

Compensation Program Design & Review

  • Provide recommendations on salary structures, ranges, and compensation frameworks
  • Advise on enhancements to compensation programs based on market trends and internal analysis
  • Provide input into salary review approaches and pay decision frameworks

Global Compensation Advisory

  • Provide guidance on compensation practices across multiple countries
  • Apply market data (e.g., Birches Group or comparable benchmarks) to inform recommendations
  • Identify risks, inconsistencies, or gaps in compensation practices

Job Evaluation & Leveling Support

  • Conduct or advise on job evaluations using established methodologies
  • Provide recommendations on job classification and leveling
  • Review and suggest updates to job descriptions to support alignment with market data

Market Analysis & Benchmarking

  • Conduct or review compensation benchmarking analyses
  • Provide written insights to support pay decisions and workforce planning

Compensation Policy & Pay Design

  • Provide input into the development or refinement of compensation policies and guidelines
  • Advise on alternative pay approaches (e.g., daily rates, project-based compensation)
  • Support consistency and internal equity across roles and geographies

Advisory Support

  • Serve as a subject matter resource to HR on compensation-related questions as they arise
  • Provide guidance on specific pay decisions, leveling, and application of compensation frameworks
  • Offer input into communication materials and tools to support understanding of compensation programs

Data & Reporting Support

  • Review compensation data and provide insights to support decision-making
  • Develop or refine compensation analyses, reports, or tools as needed

Example Deliverables

Work will be scoped and requested on an as-needed basis and may include:

  • Compensation structure and salary range recommendations
  • Job evaluation summaries and leveling recommendations
  • Market benchmarking analyses and written insights
  • Compensation policy or guideline drafts
  • Pay analysis memos to support specific decisions or scenarios
  • Recommendations for alternative pay models
  • Compensation reporting tools or templates

Deliverables are expected to be discrete and time-bound, even within an ongoing advisory relationship.

Nature of Engagement

  • Work will be intermittent and demand-driven, rather than continuous or full-time
  • Assignments will be scoped individually, with agreed deliverables, timelines, and estimated hours
  • The consultant will determine the method, timing, and approach to completing the work
  • The consultant may provide services to other clients during the term of this engagement

What This Role Is Not

To ensure clarity of scope, this engagement does not include:

  • Ongoing administration of compensation programs or payroll
  • Ownership of annual compensation cycles or HR operations
  • Day-to-day employee support or internal HR responsibilities
  • Supervision of staff or management of internal resources

Required Expertise

  • Demonstrated experience in compensation design, analysis, and advisory work
  • Experience supporting global or multi-country compensation programs
  • Strong understanding of compensation structures, benchmarking, and pay practices
  • Ability to interpret data and provide clear, actionable recommendations
  • Experience advising HR and leadership stakeholders
  • Ability to operate independently and deliver high-quality outputs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with international salary survey providers (e.g., Birches Group)
  • Experience in nonprofit or mission-driven organizations
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CCP, SHRM, or similar)

Engagement Terms

  • This is a contract opportunity for an independent service provider and is not an employment position
  • Services will be performed on a billable hourly basis
  • The anticipated hourly rate range for this engagement is $125–$175/hour per hour, depending on experience and scope alignment
  • Work will be requested on an as-needed basis, with no guaranteed minimum hours
  • The engagement is non-exclusive, and the consultant may provide services to other clients
  • The consultant is responsible for providing their own tools and work environment
